Career Progression and Rostering

Movement between Fleets
Emirates Airline recognises the aspirations of its Pilots, and will endeavour to provide career progress. Moves between aircraft groups will be offered whenever possible, at the discretion of Management.

Command Upgrade
Selection for command upgrade will be on the basis of suitability and seniority, and the following minimum experience requirements:

  • Total flying experience of 6,000 hours
  • A minimum of 4,000 hrs (P1 or P2), on Turbo-prop or Jet aircraft, with a MTOW of at least 10,000 kgs
  • A minimum of three years continuous service of Emirates

Rostering
Emirates is following a policy where the Flight Crew are able to submit requests which can influence their monthly Roster award. Crew are allowed to submit requests for trips and days off, with a variety of options; e.g. layovers, days off after the trips, avoid a trip, consecutive days off on specific dates.

At present each category (e.g. B777 First Officers) is divided into five groups: 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. These groups are rotated each month; e.g. in March, Group 1 might be the top bid group, with Group 5 at the bottom. In April, Group 1 moves to the bottom with all other groups moving up. Thus Group 2 would be the top bid group in April.

Assuming that bids have been entered correctly, the top two groups each month achieve a high satisfaction rate.

Currently Reserve assignment is shared throughout the entire Flight Crew population (not just junior crew) and is awarded a year in advance to facilitate planning. Generally each Flight Crew will receive one period of monthly Reserve within nine months.
