Location and Facilities
Emirates Clinic is located at two sites: the main clinic providing primary medical and dental facilities is located in the dnata Building on Sheikh Zayed Road; a subsidiary clinic is housed in the Emirates Group Headquarters close to Dubai International Airport. This clinic focuses on aviation medicine and occupational health, but also provides primary medical care for eligible employees.
General practitioners provide primary medical care at both sites, assisted by nurses and nurse practitioners.
The dnata Building clinic has 20 doctors’ consulting rooms, a number of consultation rooms for nurses, an excellent in-house laboratory and its own pharmacy. The medical department also has a dedicated urgent care facility for on-the-day problems.
Dental practitioners and hygienists provide primary dental care at the dnata Building, which currently has 10 consulting rooms for dentists and dental hygienists.
Tertiary care is referred to a variety of hospitals and clinics in Dubai. Access to medical imaging is usually very rapid. Laboratory testing which is not provided in-house is sent to highly rated, accredited laboratories in Dubai, South Africa or the UK.
Doctors
There are currently over 20 doctors employed at the Emirates Clinic to care for employees and their families. Their countries of origin include Australia, Belgium, Canada, Jamaica, Namibia, New Zealand, South Africa, Syria, the United Kingdom, and Zimbabwe. All doctors are fully trained General Practitioners and all hold postgraduate qualifications.
These qualifications bring a wide range of specialised skills to the clinic including paediatrics, obstetrics, occupational health, sports medicine, internal medicine, public health/travel medicine, aviation medicine and dermatology. A large number of the clinic doctors are also designated GCAA medical examiners and the clinic can also do CASA, FAA, JAR/UK CAA, South African and Transport Canada medical examinations.
As well as scheduled appointments and the Rapid Care Clinic, the doctors hold a number of specialised clinics in the following areas: asthma, cardiac risk, aviation medicals, periodic medicals for engineers, diabetes, well baby, well woman, and antenatal.
Nurses
The nursing team consists of around 20 full-time and part-time nurses who come from countries including Canada, the UK, China, Ireland and India. All have experience in primary health care and each of the nurses has also undertaken further study in a chosen specialised field. Some of the nurse-led initiatives include well baby, asthma, coronary heart disease prevention, diabetes, well women clinics and PAP smear clinics, all of which have been established to extend quality service to the patients.
The nurses are also responsible for performing all medicals for the pilots, aircraft engineers, senior management and cabin crew prior to their doctor’s appointment.
In addition, the nurses operate a telephone consultation service so that a patient can get help and advice by telephone if they are unable to visit the department in person. The practice nurses will also conduct consultations with patients in the Rapid Care Clinic and advise and treat as necessary, as well as assisting the patient in arranging appointments.
Laboratory
The Emirates Clinic Laboratory only performs testing on patients eligible to use the Emirates Clinic. All laboratory staff are licensed Medical Technologists and carry the mandatory Department of Health (Dubai) Licence.
Pharmacy
Emirates Clinic Pharmacy has a team of pharmacists with a wide range of experience in hospital and retail pharmacy. They have several years of pharmaceutical education that includes a postgraduate degree in pharmacy. They are involved in prescription audit, education of doctors and nurses on drug issues, and providing counselling to patients regarding medication.
Emergency Medical Technicians
These specialist staff render first aid to the injured/sick staff members at the airport and transport them to the nearest clinic or hospital for further treatment on a 24/7 basis. They also provide ongoing first aid refresher training for all trained Emirates first aiders based at the airport.
